Five of the Best Professional Gamblers in the World

October 19th, 2014

People have been gambling as long as human civilization has existed. Many professional gamblers often clear millions of dollars in winnings each year, raking in money from sports bets and blackjack to elite poker tournaments and horse racing.

This is a short list of some of the best gamblers in the world:

  1. Archie Karas
One of the most successful professional poker players around, Archie Karas is best known for his three year winning streak between 1992 and 1995, where he lost just one game and won $40 million. This period of success is so well-known in gambling circles that it is often referred to as “The Run”.
  2. Andrew Black
A professional gambler himself, Andrew Black is best known for founding BetFair, the UK-based online betting exchange. Betfair went public in 2011, landing Andrew Black a net worth in excess of £200M.
  3. Chris Moneymaker
American Chris Moneymaker is best known for winning the 2003 World Series of Poker, where he won $2.5 million in prize money. Most importantly, Chris is recognized for revolutionizing the sport of poker by practicing almost exclusively online before the main event – completely unheard of a decade ago.
  4. Edward Thorp
Edward Thorp is the father of card counting. Although it is illegal and looked down upon in most betting circles today, it was a revolutionary technique when Thorp pioneerd it nearly half a century ago. Thorp’s card counting methods were so successful that most casinos barred him from entering. Thorp wrote the wildly popular “Beat the Dealer” book, and went on to have an equally successful career managing hedge funds on Wall Street.
  5. Bill Benter
Often called the “most successful gambler in history”, Bill Benter is the man behind a software that analyses thousands of variables to predict horse racing results. It is estimated that Benter’s team clears upwards of $10 million each year from the Hong Kong horse racing leagues alone!
